The truth behind standing desks
Are you reading this while standing at your desk? There's a good chance that you are — standing desk are all the rage.
These desks allow you to work at your "desk job" while standing rather than sitting in a chair. They can be custom built (for thousands of dollars) or you can convert a regular desk into a sit stand desk at no cost by elevating your computer — one of my colleagues simply placed his computer on a stack of books. Sales of standing desks have soared in recent years; in many cases their sales have far outpaced those of conventional desks.
Personally, I love the idea — rather than sitting all day staring at a computer screen, surely it would be better to be standing at a adjustable height desk (while staring at a computer screen). But, I also love the idea of studying some of the assumptions surrounding electric standing desk. A common one is this: certainly it takes more effort — and extra calories — to remain upright rather than sit, and over a course of days or weeks those extra calories would add up to something significant. But is it true that a standing desk can help you avoid weight gain or even lose excess weight?
That's just what researchers publishing in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health tried to answer. (Yes, there is such a journal.) They fitted 74 healthy people with masks that measured oxygen consumption as a reflection of how many calories they burned while doing computer work, watching TV, standing, or walking on a treadmill. Here's what they found:
While sitting, study subjects burned 80 calories/hour — about the same as typing or watching TV
While standing, the number of calories burned was only slightly higher than while sitting — about 88 calories/hour
Walking burned 210 calories/hour.
In other words, use of a L shaped standing desk for three hours burns an extra 24 calories, about the same number of calories in a carrot. But walking for just a half hour during your lunch break could burn an extra 100 calories each day.
Prior reports of the calories burned by standing versus sitting suggested a much higher calorie burn rate for standing, but this new study actually measured energy expenditure and likely represents a more accurate assessment.
Reasons to stand by your small standing desk
While the new study suggests that a standing desk is unlikely to help with weight loss or avoiding weight gain, there may be other reasons to stand while you work. Advocates of standing desks point to studies showing that after a meal, blood sugar levels return to normal faster on days a person spends more time standing. And standing, rather than sitting, may reduce the risk of shoulder and back pain.
Other potential health benefits of a standing desk with drawers are assumed based on the finding that long hours of sitting are linked with a higher risk of
obesity
diabetes
cardiovascular disease
cancer (especially cancers of the colon or breast)
premature death.
But "not sitting" can mean many different things — walking, pacing, or just standing — and as the new study on energy expenditure shows, the health effects of these may not be the same. For most of these potential benefits, rigorous studies of standing gaming desk have not yet been performed. So, the real health impact of a standing desk is not certain.
If you're going to stand at your desk…
Keep in mind that using a standing computer desk is like any other "intervention" — it can come with "side effects." For example, if you suddenly go from sitting all day to standing all day, you run the risk of developing back, leg, or foot pain; it's better to ease into it by starting with 30 to 60 minutes a day and gradually increasing it. Setting a timer to remind you when to stand or sit (as many experts recommend) can disrupt your concentration, reduce your focus, and reduce your efficiency or creativity. You may want to experiment with different time intervals to find the one that works best for you.
It's also true that certain tasks — especially those requiring fine motor skills — are more accurately performed while seated. So, a standing desk may not be a good answer for everyone who sits a lot at work.
What's next?
We have seen dramatic changes in the work environment in recent years. These include open floor plans and inflatable exercise balls instead of chairs, as well as ergonomic office chair. I have colleagues who have installed a "treadmill desk" that allows them to work on a computer or video conference while walking on a treadmill. There are advantages, and perhaps some risk, that come with each of these changes. But, before we accept them as better — or healthy — we should withhold judgment until we have the benefit of more experience and, ideally, well-designed research.
Okay, you may now sit down.
How to choose the standingdesk?
As a trendy modern style, color-blocking design is rarely introduced and used standing desk.
But our designers at FEZiBO are committed to bringing you such a choice. When rustic brown combines with black, when natural and white combine, your stylish workstation comes alive.
Did you know that a good desk can lead to better health? Sitting in a chair for about 8-10 hours a day, staring at a screen for long periods of time, and hunched over can be hard to avoid taking a toll on your body。With the advent of the sit stand desk, you can choose to stand after sitting for a long time, freeing up the shoulders and waist.
It is important to choose a adjustable height desk for your home office. If you are someone that requires peace and quiet in order to be productive, try to find a space with little outside noise or with a door that can shut out distractions. Natural light can have a huge effect on motivation and energy levels, so try to set up your space near a window or in a well-lit room.
Beyond the potential health benefits of switching between sitting and standing, electric standing desk offers other advantages, primarily thanks to its customizability. An adjustable standing desk is also an adjustable sitting desk: If you find the average-height desk (29 to 30 inches) too high or too low, you can lower it or raise it so that you can sit more comfortably and ergonomically. You can program two different heights tailored to whether you’re wearing shoes or not. And as your energy and focus wax and wane throughout the day, you can choose to sit or stand according to whatever makes you feel more productive.
Hand tables are perfect for those who don't want to complicate their electronics. L shaped standing desk are made of high-quality American steel and recycled, post-industrial materials certified to be green.
If you have a cramped office space, small standing desk can also meet your needs. It takes up very little space, the motor box covers the noise of the drive components, and the gaps between the precise parts provide a quiet, wordless sense of technology.
The transition from sitting to standing through the use of a adjustable desk with drawers is a scientifically proven way to help you practice a healthier lifestyle and be more present throughout the day. By standing 15 minutes every hour, you'll start to feel the benefits of a sit-stand lifestyle without having to ramp up your exercise regimen or commit extra time to working out. If you really want to maximize your movement, using a desk bike for 30 minutes is a great option.
The numerous health, productivity, and ergonomic benefits mentioned above are the reason the standing gaming desk is at the heart of everything we do. It enables you to stand, sit, and move throughout the day, and when you do, your work surface will always be at the perfect height for the task at hand. Chosen as the "Best Stand up Desk" by Wirecutter, Forbes, Wired, and Lifehacker, our newest standing desk comes with increased stability, safety, and reliability. Millions of employees have already reaped the benefits standing desks can offer. A study completed at the NHS determined that these desks reduced the time employees spent sitting while increasing their overall productivity and positive company culture. Similarly, an Australian study found that activity-promoting desks can improve employees' ability to pay attention, accomplish tasks, and even manage stress. Employees at various other companies have seen the same results. Apple CEO Tim Cook has ensured that all 12,000 workers at his new headquarters were issued their very own best ergonomic office chair, and the government of Denmark has mandated that all office workers have the option to adopt a sit-stand work style.
See what's in your house. If you already have an office chair, you can add ergonomics by placing a pillow in your lumbar spine to support your posture, or sitting on a pillow for improved pressure relief.Put a pillow under your feet for relief and stimulation. It helps keep your blood circulating.Take a break and get up. Use the elastic band to stretch your shoulders, neck and shoulders. Do squats and sit against a wall in hunter's pose for a few minutes. It is important that you move and start the circulation and the muscles that have rested. Even if you work while sitting, activity and movement are very important.
As a modern, information-based civilization, we've moved away from the industrial and agrarian societal work patterns adopted by the generations before us that required ample physical movement. Studies show a correlation between the lack of movement over several generations and the drastic increase in potentially damaging health issues. This proves one simple but important fact: our bodies were made to move.
The first thing that happens when you sit wrong is that you lose your posture. Without proper support in the lumbar spine, the shoulder blades are pushed forward due to the weight of the head and the spine loses its natural S-curve. This is fast. A static error load affects the body after about four to five minutes and can lead to a number of health problems.
